"All men are created equal with certain unalienable rights." -Thomas Jefferson
This picture is a picture of my brother's wheelchair basketball team from when he was younger. I feel that this picture shows how everyone is treated equal in modern times. This wheelchair basketball team is perfect for young men, and women, to live out their passion of sports. Sometimes it's hard to be in a wheelchair because many people look at you differently. This picture gives me hope in our society, because everyone has their own obstacle or characteristic that makes them different than others. Even in Jefferson's time, he knew that people shouldn't be treated differently for any reason. Wheelchair sports are just one small example of how people in wheelchairs or with some form of disability are no different than anyone else. I took this picture because I know how much my brother's wheelchair basketball team meant to him, and how I see no difference between him and myself because all men{AND women} are created equal.
"All men are created equal with certain unalienable rights." -Thomas Jefferson... OR NOT.
This picture is of a disgusting human being who felt the need to park in the wheelchair loading zone. Most people look at this photo and see a motorcycle. I see a dangerous situation done by someone who just doesn't care. Because this ignorant person parked in the blue wheelchair zone, my brother had to get out of his car in the middle of a busy street. Of course, there were no other wheelchair parking spots available, which is another injustice. In my life, I have experienced so many ignorant people who treat people with disabilities as less than human. It truly disgusts me to no end that people don't treat other people as just that; PEOPLE! I felt this picture was perfect to show how all men aren't created equal, in fact, it is quite the opposite. Events that occur that are similar to that in this picture makes me lose faith in humanity.
How far away are we from Jefferson's dream?
I believe we have come a long way to treating all men as equal. I do however feel we still have a long way to go. Racism has subsided a lot, but is still apparent. Women's rights are almost completely as equal as men's rights. If we as a whole, come together and love one another as equals, than I believe we will be able to see Jefferson's dream as reality. Sadly, I don't believe this change will happen in my lifetime, but I will do everything I possibly can to make sure that my children, or their children, will live Jefferson's dream in a happy and loving world. Got America?

ReplyDeleteRighteous indignation (your anger about people's ignorance) can propel you towards change. But you also have a responsibility as someone who DOES have their eyes opened by Rob's situation to the needs of handicapped people. Just like someone who has an autistic child, they need to educate (or at least make us aware) of the special needs those kids have. My friend, Susan, who is in a wheelchair taught me that even WC-bound folks have "personal space" boundaries and I wasn't to encroach or sit on the arm of her chair. People are "disgusting" because they are ignorant.
Here's an idea: What if you were to print up a message (half sheet of a full sheet) that explained to the person parking stupidly how their action affected the person in the handicapped space. Explain that it was not only illegal how they parked, but insensitive. Assume that people are not mean or cruel, but just ignorant. Your passion can go a long way towards educating others!!
Thanks for your good work! You are amazing!
